Do I need to take the modules course?

All gradate students, except "2-year PhD" students, must take both the Communication Skills class (BIOL 5700) and the Graduate Modules class (BIOL 5710). These classes are normally taken in the first year of study.

Table: Minimum class requirements for each graduate program
  2-year M.Sc.   3-year M.Sc. 2-year Ph.D. 3-year Ph.D.
No. of 1/2 credits 4 4 2 4
BIOL 5700 Compulsory Compulsory   Compulsory
BIOL 5710/5720 Compulsory Compulsory   Compulsory
Other 1/2 credit . 2 2 2 2
Note: Students having taken BIOL5010 can take a second 1/2 credit of modules by registering for BIOL5020

How do I register for the course?

There are three course numbers for the modules course (5710, 5720 & 5730). Students must complete 3 modules (selected from a list of offerings made each Fall term) to receive credit for Modules Class 1 (BIOL5710).  An additional 3 modules are required for Modules Class 2 (BIOL5720), and another 3 modules are required for Modules Class 3 (BIOL5730).

You register for a course (5710, 5720 or 5730) just like you would for any other graduate class. However, the course takes place over BOTH the Fall and winter terms so you must register for the SAME course number in BOTH terms to receive credit. You are responsible for registering correctly.

Students taking the course for the first time must register for BIOL5710 (Graduate Module Class 1) in BOTH the Fall and Winter terms. Successful progress will result in a grade of IP (in progress) for the Fall session of BIOL5710.  A final grade for BIOL5710 will assigned at the end of the Winter term when all 3 of the selected modules have been completed.

Students may receive credit for an additional course of 3 modules in subsequent years only after the have completed BIOL5010. The course numbers for additional modules are BIOL5720 (Graduate Module Class 2) and BIOL5730 (Graduate Module Class 3).

Please note that correct registration is important with respect to graduation: the office of graduate studies will review your records just prior to your graduation. If you have not registered properly for the modules course (or any other course for that matter) this could negatively impact your ability to graduate as expected!!!!

If you need to "ADD" the course and the deadline has passed for adding the course electronically, you will need to fill out the registrars "course-ADD/DROP form".  The form is available on-line, and you can find it via searching from this link (or you could try this link).

Independent of your registration in the course with the office of graduate studies, you must also follow the procedures of selecting your 3 modules and meet all the associated deadlines. Guidelines as procedures can be found on the "home page" and a timeline is provided on the "time-line" page.

Module Inquiry Form

Please complete and email a separate copy of this form to the instructor responsible for each module that you are interested in taking this year. Note that you should take all 3 modules in the same year. A numbered list of modules, with brief descriptions and instructor contact information, posted on this web site. Please submit this form to the relevant instructors by September 30th. This information will allow instructors to contact you about organizational meetings. This is not a commitment, so you may contact more than three instructors. Note: students may also select modules given through the Faculty of Agriculture or through the Oceanography program. To do so they should contact the instructor teaching the module of interest. A list of modules at Agriculture can be found under the link for current modules.

Once you have selected 3 modules you must complete a second form (below) indicating your 3 selected modules (including those at Agriculture and Oceanography).

Module Selection Form

Please complete this form, indicating your selection of the 3 modules that will constitute your module class, and send via e-mail to the Module Co-ordinator (Joseph Bielawski: j.bielawski@dal.ca), by October 11th. Note: you must include any modules taken through the Faculty of Agriculture or through the Oceanography program in this form! If you change your selection (i.e., drop/add a module) you must obtain permission from all the involved module instructors and submit a revised Module Selection Form to the module coordinator. Before selecting these modules you should have contacted each of the respective module instructors by submitting the above Module Inquiry Form.

NOTE: This information is critical, as it establishes the program of study which a student must complete in order to obtain credit for the course.
