Ageing is a certainty that unites us all, but understanding why ageing occurs has proven to be a challenging undertaking. Can a non-adaptive process such as ageing actually evolve or is it merely the by-product of other events? Why are genes which extend life in long-lived mutants not selected for in nature? Is ageing merely a consequence of mutations accumulating through time or are there genes which while beneficial initially, are harmful once we age? Does ageing lie at the trade-off between survival  and reproduction?
